What is involved in the Canoeing Special Paper?

Candidates for the Learner Hunters and Guides examination may also choose to write an extra Canoeing (Special Paper) at the same time as the Learner Examinations if they intend to become a River Guide. To qualify as a Professional River Guide they will then need to acquire 250 hours of experience on the river and then undergo the Canoe, Kayak or Whitewater Proficiency Test.
Below you will find the 13 past papers for Canoeing.
It will really be worth your while to be able to answer the majority of questions shown below as a preparation for writing the examination. (You will see that the same questions crop up frequently.)

You will see from the diagram the questions fall into clear categories:
- The majority of questions (about a third) concern, as you would expect, canoeing, the types of canoe, canoeing safety, legislation concerning canoeing and being a learner canoe guide.
- The next biggest category of questions concerns the birds you would expect to find along the Zambezi River, names (old and new and scientific), habits, etc.
- The next category deals with questions (that you can also find in the General Paper) concerning the Zambezi River and the dams along the river, its tributaries and what lies on its banks;
- Then comes the topic of fish and fishing, focusing on the fish of the Zambezi River;
- Animal questions form the next biggest category, focusing almost exclusively on crocodiles and hippos, There is one question on antelope found on the banks of the Zambezi and one about frogs.
- Vegetation questions form the next smallest category, looking at invasive weed species and to an extent on trees that occur around the Zambezi.
- There are some questions about health considerations and First Aid, the majority dealing with heat exhaustion and sun burn.
- There are questions (all identical) on how to dispose of various sorts of waste along the Zambezi.
- And then, not represented on the chart, a few questions on stars and planets and constellations visible from the Zambezi and a few questions on vehicle repair.
