Topic Based Study – General Paper Examination Questions 1998 – October 2026

TOPICS THAT OCCUR ON THIS PAPER

(IN THE ABSENCE OF A SYLLABUS)

I believe that in the earlier days of the Learner Hunters and Guides examinations the General Paper was seeking to ensure that young guides had a wide background in matters concerning Zimbabwe and would be able to talk sensibly to tourists about the country and about current affairs. Visitors would expect their guide to know what larger issues were affecting the country or region, environmentally and to some extent politically.

There is no formal General Paper syllabus and, as the name of the paper suggests, it is difficult to predict what types of question will show up on this paper.

Below is a list of the following broad categories which occur frequently. This list will be used to categorise the questions from past papers in this book.

ABBREVIATIONS & ACRONYMS, particularly of organisations associated with tourism and conservation.

AGRICULTURAL SHOWS & TRADE FAIRS, When? Theme? Officially opened by?

ARITHMETIC – relatively simple calculations, usually with a guiding theme

CAMPFIRE – questions used to be asked on this topic quite often but now mainly interested in what the acronym stands for.

CITES   (Most CITES questions will be found on Law papers but some also on the General Paper)

C.O.P. (Conference of Parties – i.e. signatories of UN Climate Change Convention)

CURRENT AFFAIRS – mainly Zimbabwean (occasionally international) concerning major events of the previous 6 months (political events, conferences, especially with environmental significance, disasters, diseases, etc.)

FLAG AND NATIONAL COAT OF ARMS – significance of colours & images

SPORT, especially soccer, African competitions and Africa Cup of Nations

TOWNS/CITIES, AIRPORTS, HOTELS & TOURIST DESTINATIONS, HIGHWAYS, BORDER POSTS (& once buses)

TRANSFRONTIER CONSERVATION AREAS, especially ones in which Zimbabwe is involved

VEGETATION, anything that could also occur in the Habits and Habitats paper

VOCABULARY & TECHNICAL TERMS, definitions associated with wildlife and conservation (and phobias, for some reason)

WILDLIFE, anything that could occur in the Habits and Habitats paper

WORLD HERITAGE AND RAMSAR SITES – names, classification (natural vs. cultural), dates of inception

ZAMBEZI RIVER – source, mouth, length, waterfalls, dams, etc. including Victoria Falls and Kariba

ZIMBABWE – FACTS & FIGURES – Where? When? How high? How long? Name? etc.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE GENERAL PAPER

In the months leading up to the examinations, you need to pay attention as much as possible to Zimbabwean newspaper, radio and TV news. (International news items are not likely to be very helpful to you.)

Watch or listen to the local news at least once a week;

Read the main stories in a local newspaper at least once a week or subscribe to a local online news source (e.g. Bulawayo 24);

Pay attention to the headline posters around where vendors are selling newspapers and if you see one that seems to have some sort of environmental significance, try and buy the relevant newspaper and read the article;

Any item involving National Parks or the Ministry of Environment is worth studying in detail;

Follow up stories about environmental and conservation issues.
