The Zambezi River – the great artery of southern Africa

Introduction

Rising in the highlands of Angola and flowing more than 3,400 kilometres to the Indian Ocean, the Zambezi is one of Africa’s most important waterways. Along its course it forms vast floodplains, plunges over the spectacular Victoria Falls, carves deep gorges and sustains some of the continent’s richest wildlife habitats. For centuries the river has been a lifeline for African communities, a route for traders and explorers, and a source of immense natural wealth. In modern times it has become equally important for hydroelectric power, agriculture, fisheries and tourism.

The Zambezi Basin

The Zambezi Basin is the 4th largest in Africa after the Nile and the Niger (both shared by 10 countries) and the Congo (shared by 9 countries).

Flowing for approximately 3,421 kilometres from its newly identified source in the Angolan Highlands to the Indian Ocean in Mozambique, it drains a basin of about 1.4 million square kilometres and influences the lives of more than 40 million people. The Zambezi remains in many places remarkably wild. Along its course it forms immense floodplains, plunges over one of the world’s greatest waterfalls, powers major hydroelectric schemes, sustains vast wildlife populations and supports agriculture, fisheries and tourism across eight countries. It is simultaneously a river, a boundary, a highway, a barrier and an ecological lifeline. The river basin includes parts of Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, making it one of Africa’s most internationally important rivers.

Major Tributaries of the Zambezi River

The Zambezi’s immense flow is sustained by numerous tributaries draining a vast basin stretching from Angola to Malawi. The most important tributaries, moving downstream, are:

1. Lungwebungu River

The largest tributary of the Upper Zambezi, rising in the Angolan Highlands. Recent research identifying the ultimate source of the Zambezi traces the river system through the Lungwebungu headwaters. It contributes a substantial proportion of the Upper Zambezi’s water. (See “Source” below)

2. Kabompo River

Rising in north-western Zambia near the Congo watershed, the Kabompo is one of the largest tributaries entering the Upper Zambezi. It drains extensive miombo woodland and contributes significant wet-season flows.

3. Luanginga River

Another major tributary from Angola and western Zambia. Together with the Kabompo and Lungwebungu, it helps create the extensive floodplains of western Zambia.

4. Cuando (Kwando) River

Although much of its water is lost in the Okavango-Chobe system, during exceptional floods some water may reach the Zambezi via the Chobe River. Hydrologically it lies close to the Zambezi system and historically influenced the upper basin.

5. Chobe River

Joining the Zambezi at Kazungula where Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia nearly meet, the Chobe forms an important wildlife-rich tributary. It drains part of northern Botswana and the Caprivi Strip of Namibia.

6. Kafue River

The largest tributary entirely within Zambia and one of the most important in the basin. Rising on the Copperbelt Plateau, it flows through the Kafue Flats before joining the Zambezi below Kariba. At about 1,600 km long, it is the Zambezi’s longest tributary.

7. Luangwa River

One of Africa’s least-altered major rivers. Rising in north-eastern Zambia, it flows south through the spectacular Luangwa Valley before entering the Zambezi near the Mozambique border. The Luangwa supports one of Africa’s richest wildlife ecosystems.

8. Sanyati River

Draining central Zimbabwe, the Sanyati enters Lake Kariba from the south. It is one of Zimbabwe’s major tributaries of the middle Zambezi.

9. Gwayi and Sengwa Rivers

Seasonal rivers draining western Zimbabwe into the Zambezi and Lake Kariba. Though smaller than the Kafue or Luangwa, they are important for wildlife areas such as Hwange National Park.

10. Shire River

The largest tributary of the Lower Zambezi. The Shire drains Lake Malawi and flows through southern Malawi into Mozambique before joining the Zambezi downstream of Cahora Bassa. It contributes enormous volumes of water and links the Zambezi basin to one of Africa’s largest lakes.

Geological History – A River Shaped by Geological Upheaval

The modern Zambezi is surprisingly young. Geologists believe that the Upper and Lower Zambezi were once completely separate rivers. The ancestral Upper Zambezi flowed southwards toward the Limpopo system, while the Lower Zambezi occupied roughly its present course.

About 15 million years ago, major tectonic uplift occurred across central Zimbabwe created a vast inland lake and dramatically altered regional drainage patterns. Several million years later as this lake drained, the two river systems had joined and created the modern Zambezi.

Perhaps the most spectacular result of these geological events is Victoria Falls. The present falls are only the latest in a series of waterfalls that have migrated upstream, exploiting successive lines of weakness in the basalt rock and carving their way into a new position. The zig-zag pattern of gorges below the falls marks former positions of the waterfall as it has gradually retreated upstream and the position of the next line of falls is already visible, marked with a 9 in the illustration below.

Human history associated with the Zambezi

Long before Europeans arrived, the Zambezi supported complex African societies. Iron-working communities, traders and farmers occupied the valley for centuries. The river served both as a transport corridor and a source of fish, fertile soils and wildlife.

From around the 10th Century, Arab traders from the East African coast penetrated inland along the lower Zambezi.

They established trading links that connected the gold-producing regions of the Zimbabwe Plateau with the Indian Ocean world.

Gold, ivory and slaves moved eastwards while cloth, beads and luxury goods travelled inland. (It was this trade that was the root of the developments that saw the building of Great Zimbabwe.)

In the 16th Century the Portuguese arrived, keen to replace the Arab traders.

The above map is a Portuguese manuscript map of the Monomotapa (Mutapa) Empire and the Zambezi basin, generally known as “Terras do Monomotapa” from between 1600 and1630). It shows the kingdom of Monomatapa and the towns of Sofala, Quelimane and Tete and calls the Zambezi River by the name “Cuama”.  The area south of the Zambezi is labelled “Terra de Botonga” or “Land of the Tonga”. Some of the labels read Minas de Ouro (gold mines). The concentration of “gold mines” around the Zimbabwe Plateau reflects the Portuguese belief that the wealth of Monomotapa derived from the goldfields associated with Great Zimbabwe.

The Portuguese were seeking control of the gold trade. They established settlements and trading stations along the lower Zambezi. For centuries they maintained a tenuous presence through a system of large estates known as prazos, particularly in what is now Mozambique. One of the most notorious was “Kanyemba” (meaning The Ferocious), the nickname of José Rosário de Andrade, a notorious 19th-century Portuguese warlord, ivory trader, and slave master. He forged a private empire in the 19th Century in the Lower Zambezi Valley, using a massive, heavily armed mercenary army known as the Chikunda.

In the 19th Century the most famous European visitor was undoubtedly the Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone. Guided by Makololo tribesmen, Livingstone reached the great waterfall on 16 November 1855. The local people knew it as Mosi-oa-Tunya “The Smoke that Thunders.” Livingstone named it Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria.

Livingstone’s later Zambezi Expedition attempted to determine whether the river could provide a route into the African interior. The expedition ultimately failed when rapids in Mozambique proved the river was not navigable from the sea.

Before photography became widespread, the world learned about the Zambezi through artists. One of the most famous was Thomas Baines, who reached Victoria Falls in 1862 and produced some of the earliest accurate depictions of the waterfall. His paintings captured not only the vast scale of the falls but also the rainbows, vegetation and atmosphere surrounding them. His famous portfolio The Victoria Falls, Zambesi River: Sketched on the Spot introduced European audiences to one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders.

Course of the River

Upper Zambezi

 The Source

For many years the source of the Zambezi was thought to lie near Kalene Hill in north-western Zambia. However, research published in 2025 identified a more distant source in the peatlands of the Angolan Highlands. The true headwaters arise as a small trickle feeding the Lungwebungu River system, adding approximately 342 kilometres to the river’s accepted length and bringing the total to around 3,421 kilometres. The Angolan Highlands contribute most of the water entering the Upper Zambezi system.

Flowing south-eastward into western Zambia, the river enters the immense Barotse Floodplain. Stretching approximately 240 kilometres long and up to 40 kilometres wide, this is one of Africa’s largest wetland systems.

During peak flooding, water may cover more than 10,000 square kilometres.

The floodplain acts as a giant natural sponge. It slows floodwaters, traps sediments and supports extraordinary biodiversity, including huge numbers of birds, fish, hippos and the semi-aquatic lechwe antelope.

For the Lozi people, the annual flood remains central to cultural identity. The spectacular Kuomboka ceremony marks the seasonal movement of the Litunga, or king, from the flooded plain to higher ground.

Middle Zambezi

Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorges

At the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe the river reaches its most dramatic point, Victoria Falls, which also marks the transition between the Upper Zambezi and the Middle Zambezi.

At approximately 1.7 kilometres wide and over 100 metres high, Victoria Falls is among the largest curtains of falling water on Earth. During peak floods, millions of litres plunge over the edge every second.

The waterfall itself is only part of the spectacle. Below it lies a sequence of deep, narrow gorges carved into basalt. As mentioned above, these zig-zag canyons record the previous positions of the falls as they retreated upstream through geological time

The final stage of the gorges is the magnificent Batoka Gorge, whose sheer walls and turbulent rapids have become internationally famous among white-water rafters.

Kariba Dam: Triumph and Tragedy

Between 1955 and 1959 the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland built the Kariba Dam across the Zambezi. Designed by French engineer André Coyne, the 128-metre-high arch dam created Lake Kariba, one of the largest man-made reservoirs on Earth.

The dam transformed the economies of Zambia and Zimbabwe by providing hydroelectric power, supporting fisheries and stimulating tourism. Today it remains a cornerstone of regional electricity supply.

However, the human and environmental costs were immense.

Around 57,000 Tonga people were displaced from their ancestral river lands. Communities that had depended on fertile floodplains, fishing and riverine agriculture were relocated to less productive uplands. Sacred sites disappeared beneath the rising waters.

Nyami-nyami

Nyami-nyami is a powerful deity in Tonga mythology of Zimbabwe/Zambia, often depicted as a snake-like creature with a fish’s head. It protects the Tonga people and controls the Zambezi River. Legend says the creation of the Kariba Dam separated the Nyami-nyami from its wife, sparking its anger, and that in the end Nyami-nyami will destroy the dam wall in an earthquake.

As the reservoir filled, thousands of animals became stranded on shrinking islands. The famous Operation Noah rescue programme relocated more than 6,000 animals, becoming one of the largest wildlife rescue operations ever attempted.

The Lake Kariba Ecosystem

Lake Kariba itself has become a major ecosystem. Fisheries based on kapenta (imported from Tanzania), extensive aquatic habitats, and tourism centred on wildlife and houseboats now form an important part of the regional economy.

The Lower Zambezi

Ecological Consequences of Kariba Downstream

The Zambezi below Kariba is no longer a natural river. Before the dam, annual floods replenished wetlands, deposited nutrient-rich silt and maintained diverse habitats. Kariba trapped sediment and regulated river flows, reducing the natural flood pulse that had shaped the valley for millennia.  Areas such as Mana Pools National Park have experienced changes in wetland dynamics, while riverine ecosystems downstream have been altered by sediment starvation and artificial flow patterns.

Below Kariba Dam, the Zambezi enters one of Africa’s greatest remaining wilderness regions. Flowing eastward along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the river meanders through broad alluvial plains, oxbow lagoons and riverine forests that support exceptional concentrations of wildlife. On the Zimbabwean side lie the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mana Pools National Park and the Chewore and Sapi Safari Areas, while Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park protects the opposite bank. Together these areas form a vast transboundary ecosystem renowned for its elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, wild dogs, hippos and crocodiles. Ancient albizia forests shade the riverbanks, and seasonal floodplains attract huge numbers of waterbirds. Despite the influence of Kariba Dam upstream, this stretch of the river remains remarkably wild, offering some of the finest canoeing, wildlife viewing and wilderness experiences in Africa.

Cahora Bassa

Further downstream in Mozambique stands the massive Cahora Bassa Dam. Completed in 1974 during the final years of Portuguese colonial rule, it was intended to generate electricity and demonstrate Portuguese control of the territory.

Today its power station produces over 2,000 MW and supplies electricity across southern Africa, particularly to Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Like Kariba, however, Cahora Bassa has profoundly altered the river. Seasonal flooding has been reduced, sediment is trapped behind the dam, and the ecological health of the lower river and delta has been negatively affected.

The Zambezi Delta

The Zambezi finally reaches the Indian Ocean through a vast delta on the coast of Mozambique.

Historically, annual floods maintained extensive grasslands, wetlands and mangrove forests. These habitats supported large populations of buffalo, waterbuck, birds and commercially important prawns. Today many of these systems have been altered by flow regulation from the upstream dams. Reduced sediment delivery, saltwater intrusion and changing flood patterns have contributed to ecological degradation across parts of the delta.

Conservationists increasingly advocate managed environmental flows – controlled releases from dams designed to mimic natural floods and restore ecological processes.

The Zambezi as a Barrier

One of the most interesting aspects of the Zambezi is its role as a barrier.

  • Physically, the river has long restricted movement. Wide floodplains, deep channels, crocodiles, hippos and seasonal flooding have historically made crossings difficult. Major bridges remain surprisingly few.
  • Culturally, the river has often marked boundaries between languages, political systems and ethnic groups. Throughout history it separated kingdoms, influenced migration routes and helped shape the distribution of peoples across southern Africa.
  • For wildlife, the river acts both as a corridor and a barrier. Some species use it as a migration route, while others are limited by its width and seasonal flooding.

The Future of the Zambezi

Today the Zambezi stands at a crossroads. It powers cities, irrigates crops, attracts tourists and sustains some of Africa’s greatest wildlife landscapes. Yet it also faces growing pressures from dams, population growth, climate change and water abstraction.

The challenge for the 21st Century is to balance development with ecological integrity. The future health of Victoria Falls, the floodplains, the delta and the millions of people who depend on the river will depend upon maintaining the natural processes that have shaped the Zambezi for millions of years.

The Zambezi remains what it has always been: the great artery of southern Africa, linking mountains to ocean, history to modernity, and people to one of the continent’s most remarkable landscapes.
